Bold Art Deco Styling, Properly Brought Back to Life

This 1930s mantel clock is a lovely example of English Art Deco cabinet-making, with a rounded architectural case, scroll-carved front feet, and striking book-matched oak veneer to the front. A brass bezel with domed glass frames a silvered chapter ring with bold Roman numerals and pierced cathedral-style hands, printed "MADE IN ENGLAND".

Inside is an English twin-train mechanical movement, striking the hours and half-hours on a coiled gong. The rear of the case carries an original manufacturer's label reading "C.W.S. LTD, CABINET SUNDRIES FACTORY, LONDON", confirming the maker of the case.

Clocks with this level of case detailing and a legible period manufacturer's label are increasingly hard to find. This one has had the full Mahn & Co treatment and is ready to go straight onto your mantelpiece.

C.W.S. Ltd, London Art Deco Oak Case Twin-Train Gong Strike, Hours & Half-Hours Made in England

A Case Built by C.W.S. Ltd

The rounded, architectural silhouette and scroll-carved feet on this case are typical of English Art Deco mantel clocks of the 1930s. The case is confirmed as the work of C.W.S. Ltd, Cabinet Sundries Factory, London, via the original manufacturer's label fixed inside.

The movement itself carries no maker's mark, which is not unusual for English clocks of this period, where cases and movements were often supplied by separate makers.

Fully Serviced & Running Beautifully

This movement has been fully stripped to component level, cleaned, and rebuilt using Novostar oil on the mainsprings and synthetic clock oil on the pivots. It was then bench tested over several days to confirm reliable timekeeping and a clean, correct strike before being offered for sale.

The coiled gong sounds clearly on the hours and half-hours. Wind it, set it going, and it will do exactly what it should.

Honest Assessment — This One Presents Well

Case: The oak case has been sympathetically cleaned and waxed, retaining its original character and aged patina. There is light age-related wear, small areas of finish loss, and minor marks consistent with a clock of this age, but the book-matched grain to the front presents beautifully.

Dial and bezel: The silvered chapter ring is clean and legible, with crisp Roman numerals and the original pierced hands. The brass bezel and domed glass both display well.

Movement: Fully serviced by Mahn & Co. Running well and keeping good time. Strike is functioning correctly on the hours and half-hours. Ready to use immediately on arrival.
