A charming late Victorian American cottage clock in a figured walnut veneered case with decorative transfer-printed glass panel and visible pendulum. The movement has been fully serviced, and the clock is running and striking correctly on the hour and half hour. A characterful antique clock with honest pricing to match its honest condition.

Priced to reflect conditionThere is wear in the cannon pinion assembly which can cause the minute hand to vary by a couple of minutes during operation. This is fully disclosed, well understood, and has been reflected in the price. It does not affect the striking or general running of the clock.

About the Clock

The American cottage clock is one of the most enduring and collectible clock designs of the Victorian period — compact, well-made and full of period character. This example is housed in a figured walnut veneered case with the decorative transfer-printed lower glass panel that is one of the most appealing features of the type, allowing the swinging pendulum to be seen during operation.

The spring-driven mechanical movement strikes the hours and half hours, giving the clock a proper presence in a room without the bulk of a full mantel clock. It is a genuinely attractive piece of late 19th century American clockmaking.

Service — What Was Done

Fully serviced by Mahn & Co prior to sale:

  • Movement fully cleaned and serviced
  • Strike mechanism checked and adjusted
  • Movement lubricated and regulated
  • Clock tested for running and striking
  • Case cleaned and presented
  • Running and striking correctly at listing
  • Winding key supplied
  • Pendulum included

Condition

The walnut veneered case presents very well with only minor marks and imperfections commensurate with age and use. The decorative glass panel is intact and attractive. The dial displays age-related crazing and wear consistent with a clock of this period — honest patina rather than damage.

Please Note — Cannon Pinion Wear

There is wear present within the cannon pinion assembly. The clock keeps time and runs correctly, but the minute hand position can occasionally vary by approximately a couple of minutes during operation. This is a wear-related characteristic of the motion work, is well understood, and has been fully reflected in the asking price. It does not affect the striking or general timekeeping of the clock.

Please study all photographs carefully — they form an important part of the condition description.
