The Clock

Bold Art Deco Styling, Properly Brought Back to Life

This 1930s mantel clock is a striking example of Art Deco design, with a stepped oak case built up in a series of geometric tiers and finished with striking herringbone and sunburst parquetry veneer across the base. A chrome bezel frames the dial, which carries bold black Arabic numerals but no printed maker's name.

Inside is a twin-train mechanical movement striking a gong on the hours and half-hours. The rear door retains its original cabinet label, marked "Bee Ess" and dated 1937, giving a clear indication of when the case was fitted and inspected.

Clocks with this level of geometric case detailing, and with an original dated label still intact, are increasingly hard to find. This one has had the full Mahn & Co treatment and is ready to go straight onto your mantelpiece.

History

A Case Built for the Art Deco Home

The stepped, "waterfall" silhouette and geometric parquetry seen on this case are hallmarks of 1930s Art Deco cabinet-making, a striking departure from the rounded napoleon's hat and lancet cases that had dominated the previous decades.

The original cabinet label to the rear door, marked "Bee Ess" and dated 1937, ties the case to that period precisely. The dial itself carries no printed maker's name, so no claim is made as to the origin of the movement beyond what the case label documents.

The Movement

Fully Serviced & Running Beautifully

This movement has been fully stripped to component level, cleaned, and rebuilt using Novostar oil on the mainsprings and synthetic clock oil on the pivots. It was then bench tested over several days to confirm reliable timekeeping and a clean, correct strike before being offered for sale.

The gong strike sounds clearly on the hours and half-hours. Wind it, set it going, and it will do exactly what it should.

Case: The oak case has been gently cleaned and polished as part of our preparation, and the parquetry veneer retains good definition and colour contrast. There is light age-related wear, small marks, and old woodworm holes as shown in the photographs, with no sign of ongoing activity. The timber remains structurally sound.

Rear door: Shows age-related wear and old paint marks but is fully functional and retains the original "Bee Ess" cabinet label dated 1937.

Dial and bezel: The silvered dial is clean and legible, with bold Arabic numerals. The chrome bezel presents well with only minor age-related wear.

Movement: Fully serviced by Mahn & Co. Running well and keeping good time. Strike is functioning correctly on the hours and half-hours. Ready to use immediately on arrival.
