Antique Ansonia American Mantel Clock
Sanders of Lewisham Retailer Plaque
8-Day Rack & Snail Gong Strike • Hour & Half-Hour • Fully Serviced by Mahn & Co
Overview
A handsome antique American mantel clock by the renowned Ansonia Clock Company, New York, U.S.A., dating to around 1900–1915. Housed in a well-proportioned arched-top mahogany case with brass bezel, convex glass and a silvered Arabic numeral dial, this is a classic example of Ansonia's quality Edwardian-era production.
A particularly appealing feature is the original brass retailer's disc for Sanders, "The Leading London Goldsmiths", Lewisham, S.E. — giving the clock a fascinating transatlantic story: manufactured in New York and retailed in South East London.
Sanders were no ordinary high street jeweller. The Sanders name sits at the root of what became one of Britain's most prominent jewellery chains. Founded by Sidney Sanders alongside William Metherell, the business opened its first premises in Streatham High Road in 1902 and by 1907 was trading as Sanders & Co. During the 1920s the group reorganised into two separate companies — Sanders & Co. and James Walker — the latter of which eventually grew to over 130 branches and became the largest jewellers' chain in the United Kingdom. The Lewisham branch, proudly styling itself "The Leading London Goldsmiths", was part of this flourishing South London empire. A clock bearing a Sanders retailer disc is a small but tangible piece of that history.
Movement & Strike
The clock is fitted with an 8-day twin-train mechanical movement, stamped on the back plate "The Ansonia Clock Co., New York, U.S.A." with reference B21. It features a rack and snail striking mechanism, sounding the hours and half-hours on a coiled steel gong. Both the timekeeping and strike trains are running correctly.
