A handsome original Davall mantel clock, made in England during the Art Deco period of the 1930s.

The clock is housed in a wonderfully architectural oak case with a gently arched top, stepped feet and distinctive fluted detailing at either side. Its warm, richly figured timber is complemented by a gilt-finished bezel and an exceptionally attractive silvered dial.

The dial is signed Davall and Made in England, with beautifully stylised Arabic numerals, an outer minute track and original black hands. The dial is protected by bevelled glass within a hinged front bezel.

About Davall

Davall was a respected British clock manufacturer whose history can be traced to the Clerkenwell clockmaking business established by Stephen Davall in London in 1884.

Later trading as S. Davall & Sons, the firm produced English-made movements and complete clocks from the St John Street area of Clerkenwell, historically the centre of London's clock and watchmaking trade.

Davall was also connected with the important Perivale clockmaking industry, which produced some of Britain's best-known mechanical clocks during the interwar period. Surviving Davall clocks include domestic mantel and wall clocks, commercial timepieces and clocks produced for military use.

This example is a particularly attractive survivor from that important period of British clockmaking.

Movement and Restoration

The clock contains its traditional English-made, spring-driven mechanical movement. It is a dedicated time-only clock, offering the pleasure of a mechanical movement without an hourly strike or chime.

The movement has been removed from the case, dismantled, cleaned, inspected and lubricated — Novostar oil to the mainspring, synthetic clock oil to the pivots — before being reassembled and tested. It is running well at the time of listing.

The oak case has been carefully revived by hand while retaining its original character. It has been refinished with traditional garnet shellac, gently cut back and protected with Renaissance microcrystalline wax. The result is a deep, warm period finish rather than an overly bright modern appearance.

Condition

Presented in very good restored vintage condition. The wooden case retains minor marks, variations and signs of age consistent with a clock approaching a century old. These have deliberately not been erased and form part of its genuine period character.

The silvered dial presents particularly well, with only small age-related marks visible on close inspection. The bezel and other metal components retain some natural mellowing and patination.
