Two names are better than oneMost Victorian carriage clocks carry either a maker's name or a retailer's name — rarely both. Here you have a documented French maker and a named Belgravia retailer on the same clock. That dual provenance gives it considerably more character and collectability than an unsigned example.

About the Clock

During the late Victorian period, French carriage clocks were among the most desirable portable timepieces available. Originally designed for travel by carriage, rail and steamship, they soon became symbols of refinement on desks, dressing tables and mantelpieces in well-appointed homes throughout Britain and Europe.

This example captures that tradition in full — a substantial five-glass brass case with bevelled panels, a clean white enamel dial signed by the retailer, and a reliable eight-day movement. Payne & Son of Lowndes Street would have served a discerning Belgravia clientele; a clock sold through their shop was a quality purchase by the standards of the day, and it remains so now.

Service — What Was Done

Professionally serviced by Mahn & Co prior to sale:

  • Movement removed and inspected
  • Movement professionally serviced
  • Pivots and pivot holes checked
  • Escapement inspected and adjusted
  • Movement lubricated with clock oils
  • Case carefully cleaned and polished
  • Glass panels cleaned inside and out
  • Test run to confirm reliable operation

Condition

This is a genuine Victorian antique and should be expected to show signs of age and use. The brass case presents attractively with mellow age-related patina, light marks and wear consistent with its years. The bevelled glass panels display well. The enamel dial is clear and legible with some age-related imperfections visible on close inspection.

As with all antique mechanical clocks, small adjustments may be required after delivery and setting up — this is normal and not a fault. Please study all photographs carefully — they form an important part of the condition description.
