Smiths St Paul’s Bakelite Mantel Clock Bim Bam Chime Fully Serviced Working
Smiths Enfield "St Paul's" Bakelite Bim Bam Mantel Clock
A Handsome Bakelite Mantel Clock, Properly Brought Back to Life
This Smiths Enfield mantel clock is presented in a deep, polished dark Bakelite case with a stepped arch pediment and a substantial brass bezel. The silvered dial carries bold black Roman numerals, elegant black hands, and is printed "SMITHS".
Inside is a genuine Smiths Enfield eight-day twin-train movement, chiming on the half hour and hour using a three-rod bim bam mechanism, a warmer, more musical alternative to a simple single-gong strike. The rear movement plate is clearly stamped "SMITHS ENFIELD, MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN, BY THE ENFIELD CLOCK CO. LTD", confirming genuine origin beyond doubt.
Genuine Enfield-made movements that have actually been serviced, rather than simply wound up and sold as seen, are becoming harder to find. This one has had the full Mahn & Co treatment and is ready to go straight onto your mantelpiece.
Smiths Enfield
Smiths English Clocks Ltd of Enfield were Britain's leading clock manufacturer through the mid twentieth century, producing millions of dependable clocks for homes across the country. This deep-cased, brass-bezelled Bakelite style was among their more refined mantel designs, paired here with a bim bam chiming movement rather than the more common single-gong strike.
The backplate stamp confirms manufacture "BY THE ENFIELD CLOCK CO. LTD", tying this piece directly to Smiths' main clockmaking works.
Fully Serviced & Running Beautifully
This movement has been fully stripped to component level, cleaned, and rebuilt using Novostar oil on the mainsprings and synthetic clock oil on the pivots. The three-rod bim bam chime was checked and adjusted, and the movement was bench tested over several days to confirm reliable timekeeping and correct chiming before being offered for sale.
The bim bam chime has a warm, musical tone on the half hour and hour, distinct from a standard gong strike. Wind it, set it going, and it will do exactly what it should.

Case: The Bakelite case has been gently cleaned and polished as part of our preparation, bringing out a deep, rich shine. There is light age-related wear consistent with a clock of this age, but nothing that detracts from display.
Dial: The silvered dial is clean and legible, with crisp Roman numerals and original Smiths branding. The brass bezel has a lovely warm finish with light age-related patina.
Movement: Fully serviced by Mahn & Co. Running well and keeping good time. The bim bam chime sounds correctly on the half hour and hour. Ready to use immediately on arrival.
