A handsome vintage Smiths Enfield "Hadleigh" mantel clock, dating to the early 1950s, and a genuinely uncommon model that rarely appears on the market, let alone in fully restored, ready-to-enjoy condition like this. Its tall oak case echoes the proportions of a traditional longcase clock in miniature, giving it real presence on a mantel or shelf without dominating the room.

Fitted with a square chrome-framed dial, raised Arabic numerals and decorative corner detailing, this is a clock that will draw attention the moment it is unwrapped, and one that has been properly restored rather than simply wound and photographed for a quick sale.

Smiths Enfield

Smiths Enfield clocks were produced by one of the largest and most prolific British clock manufacturers of the twentieth century, known for solid, dependable movements fitted into a wide range of case styles. The Hadleigh model, with its tall, narrow oak case, was designed to echo the proportions of a traditional longcase clock in miniature form for the mantel or shelf.

Restoration Carried Out

  • Movement fully stripped down and ultrasonically cleaned
  • Pivots and jewels lubricated with synthetic clock oil
  • Mainsprings assessed and serviced with Novostar as required
  • Reassembled and multi-day bench tested for timekeeping and strike accuracy
  • Oak case cleaned, revived and wax finished

Case & Dial Condition

The oak case retains an attractive original patina that only comes with genuine age, warm, deep, and full of character. There are small historic woodworm flight holes to the top left of the case front, now treated and blended into the finish. These are cosmetic, longstanding, and typical of a case of this age, not a functional concern, and are disclosed here in full so you know exactly what you are buying. The dial has a warm aged cream tone with light age-related marks, and the chrome bezel shows some minor pitting consistent with a Smiths clock of this period, wear that adds to rather than detracts from its vintage appeal.
