A Handsome Post-War Mantel Clock, Properly Brought Back to Life

The Smiths Enfield "Battersea" is one of the most appealing tambour-cased mantel clocks of the early 1950s. The arched oak case sits on a carved plinth base, its warm grain framed by a substantial brass bezel — a design with real presence that suits both traditional and more understated rooms equally well.

Inside is a genuine Smiths Enfield eight-day twin-train movement, striking the hours and half-hours on a coiled gong with the mellow tone that made these clocks so well loved in British homes for generations. Smiths English Clocks Ltd of Enfield were the dominant British clockmaker of the period, and the Battersea was one of their most popular and best-engineered designs.

Genuine Enfield movements that have actually been serviced, rather than simply wound up and sold as seen, are becoming harder to find. This one has had the full Mahn & Co treatment and is ready to go straight onto your mantelpiece.

Smiths Enfield Battersea Model Oak Case Eight-Day Strikes Hours & Half-Hours Original Winding Key

Fully Serviced & Running Beautifully

This movement has been fully stripped to component level, ultrasonically cleaned, and rebuilt using Novostar grease on the spring barrels and synthetic clock oil on the pivots and jewels. It was then bench tested over several days to confirm reliable timekeeping and a clean, correct strike before being offered for sale.

The coiled gong has a warm, mellow tone that carries well without being intrusive — the classic Enfield sound. Wind it, set it going, and it will do exactly what it should.

The backplate is stamped "SMITHS ENFIELD, MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN," confirming genuine origin beyond any doubt.

Honest Assessment — This One Presents Well

Case: The oak case has been gently cleaned and polished as part of our preparation, bringing out a rich, warm finish while preserving its authentic period character. There is light age-related wear consistent with a clock of this age, but nothing that detracts from display.

Dial: The original silvered chapter ring is clean and legible, with gilt Arabic numerals and a wood-effect centre panel. The brass bezel retains a gentle age-appropriate patina.

Movement: Fully serviced by Mahn & Co. Running well and keeping good time. Strike is functioning correctly. Ready to use immediately on arrival.
