Meet Helena

Helena is a handsome old Gustav Becker with real presence. Her sweeping mahogany case and richly figured veneer give her a distinctly grand appearance, while inside sits a fully serviced German two-train movement striking the hours and half-hours on a traditional gong. Carefully restored, regulated and tested, she’s elegant, substantial and very much the sort of clock that expects to be noticed.

A truly striking antique German mantel clock by the celebrated clockmaker Gustav Becker — one of the great names in nineteenth and early twentieth century European horology, whose workshops in Freiburg produced some of the finest volume-made movements of their era. This example is presented in a beautifully figured mahogany veneered "Napoleon's hat" case and dates from approximately the 1920s to 1930s.

The elegant case has that unmistakable sweeping, arched profile with dramatic curved sides and a stepped moulded base — a real statement piece rather than a plain box clock. Its richly figured mahogany veneer displays wonderful depth and movement, with the grain changing dramatically as it catches the light, and the case has been polished to bring that figuring fully to life.

The original silvered dial is furnished with crisp black Roman numerals, an outer minute track and finely shaped blued-steel hands, and carries the Gustav Becker trademark plainly visible just above the centre arbor — genuine, confirmed provenance rather than a guessed attribution. It is protected by a glazed brass bezel with a hinged front door, giving easy access for winding and setting.

Clocks of this quality, by this maker, in this condition, do not come up often — and a fully serviced example, ready to place on the mantelpiece and enjoy immediately, is a genuine rarity.

Gustav Becker Movement

The clock is powered by a quality German two-train mechanical movement, bearing the recognised Gustav Becker trademark — a maker whose movements were prized in their day for robust engineering and reliable timekeeping, and which remain highly collectable now.

It strikes the number of hours on a coiled gong, together with a single strike at each half-hour, filling a room with the warm, resonant tone that only a genuine antique German striking movement produces — a world away from a modern quartz imitation.

Fully Serviced

Components individually inspected before careful reassembly
Mainsprings lubricated with Novostar oil; pivots lubricated with synthetic clock oil
Movement regulated and tested; time and striking trains both operating correctly

Condition

The clock is in attractive restored antique condition and presents extremely well. Its polished mahogany case remains particularly impressive, with rich colour and highly decorative figuring.

The original silvered dial displays visible age-related spotting, surface marks and general wear, including marking around the winding apertures. The case also retains some small knocks, scratches and signs of use appropriate to its age. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of this description.
