A genuine antique French brass carriage clock in a classic five-glass case with bevelled panels, white enamel dial with Roman numerals and a visible platform escapement through the top glass. Fully stripped, ultrasonic cleaned and professionally serviced by Mahn & Co including a mainspring inspection, clean and re-grease with Novostar, and barrel service. Running and keeping time. Supplied with its original leather travelling case with purple velvet lining.

A proper service — not a clean and sellThis clock has been fully stripped to component level, ultrasonically cleaned, the mainspring inspected, cleaned and freshly greased with Novostar, and the barrel has been serviced before reassembly. That is a significantly more thorough preparation than most carriage clocks offered for sale receive.

Original Leather Travelling Case Included

The clock retains its original leather travelling case with purple velvet lining — the case in which it would originally have been transported by its Victorian owner. These cases are frequently lost or discarded; surviving intact with the clock adds both practical value and period charm.

About the Clock

French carriage clocks of this type were produced in Paris during the late Victorian period — originally designed for travel by carriage, rail and steamship, they became equally popular as desk and mantelpiece clocks in well-appointed homes throughout Britain and Europe. The five-glass case with bevelled panels is the classic form, allowing the movement to be admired from all sides.

The platform escapement is visible through the top bevelled glass panel — the balance wheel ticking steadily and the lever escapement engaging with each beat. It is one of the quiet pleasures of owning a mechanical carriage clock. The brass case has been carefully cleaned and gently polished to conservation standard — enough to present well without destroying the natural aged patina that gives a genuine antique carriage clock its character. It has not been over-polished or buffed to a showroom finish.

  • Mainspring barrel serviced
  • Platform escapement inspected and adjusted
  • Movement reassembled with correct lubrication
  • Case carefully cleaned

Condition

The brass case presents with a warm natural patina — deliberately left unpolished to preserve its honest antique character. The bevelled glass panels are clear and present well. The white enamel dial with Roman numerals is legible and attractive with minor age-related marks consistent with its years.

The original leather travelling case shows age-related wear as expected but remains structurally sound with its purple velvet lining intact. As with all antique mechanical clocks, minor adjustment may be required after delivery — this is normal and not a fault. Please study all photographs carefully — they form an important part of the condition description.
