Vintage Smiths Enfield Westminster Chime Mantel Clock 3 Train Fully Serviced
Vintage Smiths Enfield Westminster Chime Mantel Clock
Fully Serviced
A particularly decorative Smiths Enfield design, in a figured architectural case, fully stripped, serviced and tested and ready to enjoy.
The Clock
Dating to approximately the mid-20th century, this is one of the more decorative Smiths Enfield designs, with a handsome architectural wooden case, carved side panels, and beautifully figured timber to the front and dial centre. The dial is finished with a silvered Roman numeral chapter ring and a polished metal bezel, and the figured centre carries the original, subtly applied SMITHS signature, only clearly visible on close inspection.
Maker: Smiths Enfield
Smiths Enfield clocks were produced in Great Britain by Smiths English Clocks, one of the best-known British clockmaking names of the mid-20th century. This example carries the original SMITHS signature on the figured dial centre.
Westminster Chime Movement
Fitted with the original three-train Smiths Enfield mechanical movement, with separate trains for timekeeping, Westminster quarter chimes and hour striking. The clock chimes the traditional Westminster sequence on a bank of five resonant rods, followed by the correct hour strike, and is running, chiming and striking correctly at the time of listing.
Restoration Undertaken
- Movement fully stripped and cleaned
- Mainsprings removed, cleaned and lubricated with Novostar mainspring oil
- Components individually cleaned; pivots and bearing surfaces inspected and attended to
- Movement reassembled and lubricated with synthetic clock oil
- Regulated and tested for accurate timekeeping, chime and strike
- Case sympathetically cleaned and revived, retaining its original finish and patina
Condition
The case presents extremely well, with minor marks, small knocks and areas of wear consistent with age, particularly around some edges. The silvered chapter ring, glass and polished bezel all present very nicely, and the highly figured wooden dial centre is a particularly attractive feature. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
