Meet Neville, a grand old Newcastle gentleman with an ornate waistcoat, a wonderfully weathered face and absolutely no intention of entering a room quietly.
Dating from around the 1930s, this substantial mechanical mantel clock features a retailer-signed silvered dial for The Northern Goldsmiths Co., Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Northern Goldsmiths was a prestigious Newcastle jeweller and retailer, giving the clock a particularly appealing connection to the North East.
A well-regarded jeweller and retailer based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northern Goldsmiths retailed quality timepieces to the North East throughout the early to mid-20th century. A retailer-signed dial such as this ties the clock directly to that regional heritage.
Westminster Chime Movement
The traditional three-train mechanical movement plays the familiar Westminster melody on five gong rods, sounding progressively on each quarter-hour before playing the full sequence and counting the hour.
A convenient Silent/Chime selector is positioned beside the three o'clock numeral, allowing the chimes to be switched off when preferred.
Restoration
The movement has been fully dismantled, cleaned and serviced before being carefully reassembled, adjusted and tested. The motion work and hand friction have also been corrected to ensure reliable operation.

Case and Dial
The shapely wooden case has a broad arched profile with gently flared sides, decorative line detailing and unusual carved floral panels at the lower corners. The contrasting grain and warm brown colouring give the clock a distinctive architectural appearance.
The case has been sympathetically cleaned and revived while retaining its original character and age-related variation. The hinged glazed brass bezel opens correctly to provide access to the winding points and regulator.
The silvered dial carries elegant black Arabic numerals, ornate period hands and the original Northern Goldsmiths retailer's signature. It displays extensive authentic wear, scratches, spotting and patination accumulated during many decades of use. This has deliberately been preserved rather than refinished and is clearly shown in the photographs.

Condition
This is an authentic vintage clock and carries visible cosmetic wear consistent with its age. The dial is notably aged and weathered, while the wooden case presents attractively following sympathetic restoration. The movement is operating correctly and has been tested following servicing. As with all mechanical pendulum clocks, minor regulation or levelling may occasionally be required after transport and settling into a new home. Straightforward setup, winding and regulation instructions will be included.
