Meet Sylvia

Sylvia is a handsome vintage Garrard mantel clock combining restrained British styling with the reassuring presence of a traditional mechanical movement. Her softly arched wooden case, warm natural grain and polished chrome bezel create an elegant appearance without becoming overly ornate.

Garrard is one of the most recognisable names in twentieth-century British precision engineering. Its clocks were designed as dependable household timepieces and built with the reassuring solidity expected of quality English manufacture. Sylvia captures that heritage beautifully.

Her silvered dial carries distinctive stylised Arabic numerals and elegant black hands. Its naturally aged surface displays attractive spotting and wear accumulated over many decades, deliberately preserved as part of Sylvia's genuine history rather than erased through modern refinishing.

The Movement and Strike

Behind the dial is Garrard's substantial English two-train mechanical movement, clearly stamped Made in England. One mainspring powers the timekeeping train while the second operates the striking mechanism.

At the appropriate times, Sylvia sounds upon her traditional coiled gong. The substantial gong and correctly positioned hammer produce a warm, resonant note — far richer and more atmospheric than any electronic reproduction.

Professionally Restored

Sylvia has been sympathetically restored and mechanically serviced by Mahn & Co. Her movement has been cleaned, inspected and correctly lubricated (Novostar oil on the mainsprings, synthetic clock oil on the pivots), while the striking mechanism has been carefully adjusted and synchronised.

The wooden case has been gently revived and wax finished, enhancing its rich colour and grain while retaining the small marks that belong to an authentic vintage piece. The chrome-plated bezel has also been carefully cleaned without aggressively removing its established character.

She is now running confidently, keeping good time and striking correctly. As with every traditional mechanical clock, minor adjustment may occasionally be required after transport and while settling into a new home.

Condition

Sylvia is presented in very good restored vintage condition. Her case retains occasional small marks consistent with age, while the original dial shows visible spotting, surface wear and patination. These features are clearly shown in the photographs and form part of her authentic appearance.
