A handsome mantel clock in the classic sweeping "Napoleon's hat" case form, dating to the late Art Deco period of the 1920s-1930s. This dating is based on the case profile, the chime/silent selector above the dial and the style of the silvered Arabic dial, all typical features of English mantel clocks of the era, rather than any maker's mark.

The case is crafted from solid, richly figured mahogany, a timber prized for centuries by English cabinet makers for its depth of colour, tight close grain and the way it takes a hand-finished polish. Here it has been cut and bookmatched around the sweeping curves of the hat form, then carved along the base with a fine beaded moulding, showing the quality of construction that separates a good clock case from an ordinary one.

Inside, a substantial three-train movement drives the hour strike and a full Westminster chime played out on five graduated gongs, the same four-phrase melody made famous by the bells of the Elizabeth Tower. It is one of the most recognisable and best-loved chimes in English clockmaking, and on a case of this size it rings with real depth and presence, filling a room rather than simply marking the hour. A chime/silent selector above the dial lets you enjoy the full chime or run the clock silently, exactly as you wish.

Condition: Very good antique condition. The case has been sympathetically cleaned and polished, with minor age-related marks consistent with a genuine period piece. The silvered dial shows light patina, adding to its original character. No maker's name is visible on the dial or movement, so this is offered as an unattributed but good quality English mantel clock of the period.
