Antique c1930 Mauthe German Mantel Clock Gong Strike Mechanical Fully Serviced
Antique c.1930 Mauthe German Mantel Clock
Gong Strike, Fully Serviced
A handsome German mantel clock by Mauthe, in a Napoleon-hat oak case, fully stripped, serviced and tested and ready to enjoy.
The Clock
Dating to approximately the late 1920s to early 1930s, this Mauthe mantel clock is housed in a well-proportioned dark oak Napoleon-hat case, with attractive grain and a decorative Greek-key border running around the base. The silvered dial carries elegant period Arabic numerals, a minute track, black hands, and sits behind an opening glazed bezel.
Maker: Mauthe
Friedrich Mauthe was a long-established German clock manufacturer based in Schwenningen, in the Black Forest region — one of the major hubs of German clockmaking through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement in this clock is stamped MAUTHE and numbered 775920, with a FOREIGN export mark typical of German movements produced for the British market in this period.
Mechanical Gong Strike
Fitted with the original Mauthe two-train mechanical movement, striking the hours on a resonant coiled gong for a rich, traditional tone. It is running and striking correctly at the time of listing.
Restoration Undertaken
- Movement fully stripped and cleaned
- Mainsprings removed, cleaned and lubricated with Novostar mainspring oil
- Pivots and bearing surfaces cleaned and lubricated with synthetic clock oil
- Movement reassembled, regulated and tested for accurate timekeeping and strike
- Case cleaned and sympathetically revived, retaining its original character and patina
Condition
The case presents extremely well, with minor age-related marks in keeping with a clock approaching a century old. The silvered dial retains some light age-related spotting and patination, which has been deliberately preserved rather than over-restored. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
