A characterful late-19th-century French carriage clock, dating from approximately circa 1880 and retailed by Walters & George, 270 Regent Circus W, London — whose name and address are printed directly on the dial.

This is a particularly attractive and substantial example, featuring an ornate architectural case with repeating beaded decoration, a beautifully shaped carrying handle and five original bevelled glass panels.

Circa 1880 Lever Platform Escapement Retailer-Signed Dial Five Bevelled Glass Panels French Movement

Walters & George, 270 Regent Circus

The dial carries the retailer's printed signature, "Walters & George, 270 Regent Circus W" — Regent Circus being the historic name for the Oxford Circus / Piccadilly Circus area before its renaming in the 1880s, consistent with a genuine Victorian West End retailer. No independent trade record of the firm has been located to date, so the attribution rests on the dial signature itself rather than on any documented company history.

The Movement

The clock contains a quality French mechanical movement with a traditional lever platform escapement and compensated balance, visible through the circular top glass. The rear plate is correctly marked France.

The Dial

The gilt dial retains its elegant stylised Arabic numerals, blued steel hands and original Walters & George retailer's signature. It has been deliberately preserved rather than refinished — its mellow colouring and softly faded printing are genuine evidence of age, creating a coherent appearance alongside the untouched case finish.

Restoration Checklist

  • ✔ Movement fully cleaned, serviced and lubricated
  • ✔ Novostar oil applied to mainsprings; synthetic clock oil to pivots
  • ✔ All five bevelled glass panels removed and cleaned individually
  • ✔ Escapement tested and running well
  • ✔ Case finish sympathetically conserved, not polished or refinished

Condition

The clock is presented in sympathetically conserved condition. The movement has been mechanically restored, while the exterior has intentionally been left with its original aged appearance, consistent with approximately 145 years of age.

Please examine every photograph carefully, as the images form an important part of this description and show the clock's true condition, including dial and case finish, exactly as it will arrive.
