Original Kienzle Movement 8-Day Mechanical Bim-Bam Strike Tambour Case Original Labels Preserved Berlin Retailer Provenance

The Clock

Dating to approximately 1930, this German Kienzle mantel clock is housed in an elegant dark-finished wooden tambour case with beautifully shaped mouldings and a wonderful period appearance. The original silvered dial carries bold Arabic numerals, a minute track, and elegant blued steel hands.

Maker: Kienzle

Kienzle was one of the largest and most respected German clock manufacturers of the 20th century, based in Württemberg. This example retains its original Kienzle manufacturer's label confirming German manufacture, along with a period retailer's plaque from a clock, jewellery and goldware retailer at Münzstrasse 26, Berlin, and a later German repairer's label from Frankfurt. These original labels have deliberately been preserved as part of the clock's history.

Bim-Bam Strike Movement

Fitted with the original Kienzle 8-day mechanical movement — a two-train clock with separate winding for timekeeping and striking. The Bim-Bam mechanism sounds its distinctive contrasting notes on a bank of resonant gong rods, producing the rich, mellow sound associated with quality German mantel clocks of this period.

Restoration Undertaken

  • Movement fully stripped and cleaned
  • Mainsprings removed, cleaned and lubricated with Novostar mainspring oil
  • Pivots and bearing surfaces cleaned and lubricated with synthetic clock oil
  • Movement reassembled, regulated and tested for accurate timekeeping and strike
  • Case sympathetically cleaned and revived, retaining its original marks and patina

Condition

Presented in very attractive antique condition. The wooden case has been sympathetically cleaned and revived while retaining the minor marks, variations and patina expected from a clock approaching a century old. The original silvered dial displays attractive age-related patination and spotting, and has intentionally not been aggressively polished or refinished, preserving its authentic period appearance. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
