1930s German HAC Mantel Clock
Fully Serviced · Mechanical Gong Strike · Retailer Provenance
A handsome German mantel clock dating from approximately the 1930s, made by the Hamburg American Clock Company, better known to collectors as HAC.
The clock is powered by a traditional two-train mechanical movement bearing HAC's distinctive crossed-arrows trademark and the reference W278. The movement has been fully serviced and tested and is running strongly.
Mechanical Gong Strike
The clock strikes on a large coiled gong, producing a deep and resonant traditional sound. The mechanical striking mechanism announces the hours and marks the half-hour.
Maker History: Hamburg American Clock Company
HAC was one of Germany's largest and most prolific clockmakers from the late 19th century through the 1930s, exporting widely across Europe and beyond. The firm's crossed-arrows mark is one of the most recognisable trademarks in German horology, and its two-train gong-striking mantel movements of this period are prized by collectors for their robust engineering and reliability.
Dial and Case
The attractive dial combines a silvered Arabic numeral chapter ring with a richly figured wooden centre. Elegant decorative hands, twin winding apertures and a polished glazed bezel complete its classic period appearance.
The shaped wooden case features a traditional arched profile with contrasting carved foliate appliqués and moulded base detailing. It has been carefully cleaned and waxed while retaining its authentic period finish and character.
Retailer Provenance
The inside of the case retains its period retailer's label reading:
"Examined by J. Course & Son, Jewellers,
Letchworth and Royston"
Dimensions
Approximately 22 cm high (8.7 in) × 26 cm wide (10.2 in) × 12 cm deep (4.7 in).

The clock presents beautifully from the front. As an authentic vintage piece, the wooden case displays surface marks, rubbing, small knocks and areas of finish wear, particularly across the curved top and sides. The silvered chapter ring, hands and bezel also show light age-related wear. These points are cosmetic, consistent with the clock's age and clearly represented in the photographs.
Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
A characterful interwar German mantel clock, fully serviced and ready to enjoy.
