Overview

A genuinely impressive mantel clock — at 50cm wide, this dwarfs the small tambour clocks most collectors are used to seeing, and commands real presence on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or hearth. The oak case is beautifully shaped, with sweeping curved shoulders, a domed top, beaded edge moulding, and turned column detailing flanking the silvered dial. Indicatively dated to the 1930s on case style and dial printing.

Scale & Presence

Most 1930s mantel clocks that come through our workshop are compact tambour cases built to sit unobtrusively. This one is different — the wide, sculptural case and generous dial give it a commanding look that photographs undersell. If you want a clock that reads as a genuine centrepiece rather than a small accent, this is a rare size to find in good original condition.

Maker & Movement

The backplate is clearly stamped "MADE IN F.H.T. ENGLAND" within an oval cartouche, confirmed directly from the movement. The F.H.T. mark is an uncommon one — we see far more Enfield, Smiths, and Elliott movements pass through the workshop than F.H.T., which adds a point of interest for collectors who enjoy the lesser-documented English makers alongside the well-known names. This is a traditional twin-train key-wound mechanical clock, with separate going and striking trains, sounding on a full coiled gong for a rich, resonant strike rather than a thin chime-rod tone.

The Dial

Silvered dial with bold Arabic numerals and pierced scroll hands, printed "MADE IN ENGLAND" beneath the 6. Protected by a hinged glazed bezel giving access to the winding arbors and hands.

Restoration

Fully serviced in our Norwich workshop. Mainsprings treated with Novostar oil and pivots with synthetic clock oil as standard practice.
