Circa 1930s–1940s Mahogany Case Garrard Movement Coiled Gong Strike

Meet Gerald — a distinguished English mantel clock with a handsome mahogany case, an aged silvered dial, and the sort of quiet presence that suggests he still wears cufflinks to lunch.

Dating from around the 1930s–1940s, the dial carries the Walker & Hall name, while the substantial mechanical movement was manufactured in England by Garrard. The clock retains its original Garrard-branded coiled gong, regulator, and decorative Garrard winding key.

Maker History

Walker & Hall was a well-regarded Sheffield silversmith and retailer, known for supplying quality household and horological pieces through the early-to-mid twentieth century. Garrard, the movement maker here, has a long-standing reputation in English clockmaking for robust, dependable two-train mechanisms — the pairing of Walker & Hall retail styling with genuine Garrard engineering reflects a common and desirable arrangement of the period.

Movement & Strike

The quality two-train mechanical movement has been fully dismantled, cleaned, and serviced before being carefully reassembled, adjusted, and tested. Gerald strikes the hours on a deep, resonant coiled gong, with a single strike at the half-hour — warm and authoritative without being excessively loud.

  • Traditional key-wound mechanical movement, made in England by Garrard
  • Hours counted on the hour, single gong strike at the half-hour
  • Original Garrard coiled gong and branded gong block
  • Original-style Garrard regulator and winding key included
  • Mainsprings serviced with Novostar oil
  • Pivots serviced with synthetic clock oil

Case & Dial

The beautifully shaped mahogany case has a gently curved top, stepped architectural base, and rich reddish-brown colouring. It has been sympathetically cleaned and revived, preserving the depth, grain, and character of the original wood rather than stripping away its history.

The silvered metal dial features elegant black Arabic numerals and period hands. The hinged glazed bezel opens correctly, and the rear wooden access door remains complete with its original-style circular fastening.

Please refer to the photographs for the dial's age-related wear and patination, particularly around the winding holes and outer chapter ring — retained deliberately as part of the clock's authentic character.

Condition

This is an authentic vintage clock and consequently carries cosmetic marks, surface wear, and patination consistent with its age — please see the photographs for full detail. The movement is operating correctly and has been tested following servicing. As with all mechanical pendulum clocks, minor regulation or levelling may occasionally be required after transport and settling into a new home. Straightforward setup instructions are included.

A characterful English mantel clock combining Walker & Hall styling, genuine Garrard engineering, and nearly a century of honest history.
