Meet Valerie

Valerie is a beautifully styled Smiths mantel clock dating from January 1959. Her sweeping wooden case and sculptural outline capture the optimism of late-1950s British design, while remaining elegant enough for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Her superb silvered dial has a softly radiating finish, applied faceted gilt hour markers and matching angular hands. The clean, architectural detailing gives Valerie a distinctive atomic-era character without becoming overly bold.

The Movement

Inside is the original Smiths F6G eight-day floating-balance movement, stamped with the code 91 and dating to January 1959. Unlike a conventional pendulum clock, its balance escapement does not require careful levelling or setting into beat. Two independently wound trains power the timekeeping and traditional coiled-gong strike.

Professionally Restored

Valerie has been professionally restored and serviced by Mahn & Co. The movement has been cleaned, inspected, correctly lubricated (Novostar oil on the mainsprings, synthetic clock oil on the pivots) and regulated, with the timekeeping and strike functions tested through their full operating cycles.

The wooden case has been sympathetically restored and hand-finished to revive its warmth and depth while preserving the character earned across more than six decades. Minor marks and gentle edge wear remain as part of its authentic vintage appearance rather than being aggressively erased.
