Overview

A well-proportioned mahogany mantel clock with a swept scroll pediment finished in an original leatherette-topped covering, boxwood stringing and an oval fan/shell inlay panel to the front, fitted with a PHS (Philip Haas & Söhne) German two-train striking movement. The dial is fitted with two winding arbors only (time and strike), so this clock strikes on the hour and half-hour via a coiled gong rather than chiming. Brass carrying handles are fitted to both sides. Dating to the period is indicative, based on case style, dial design and movement construction, rather than a documented production date.

Maker & History

The movement carries a casting mark on the backplate confirming manufacture by PHS (Philip Haas & Söhne), a well-regarded German clock movement maker of the period. The construction, coiled gong and cast fittings are typical of their two-train striking movements from the 1920s–1930s.

Case

The case is built in mahogany with a fine boxwood strung border and a central oval inlay panel depicting a stylised shell/leaf motif. The scroll pediment retains its original leatherette-topped covering, a textured finish commonly applied to the crestings of clocks of this type and period. There is light wear consistent with age and handling, including some rubbing to the top edges of the pediment and light marks to the base near the feet.

Strike Sound

The strike hammer is currently left unpadded, giving a clear, bright bell-like tone from the gong. If you would prefer a softer, more mellow strike, a leather hammer pad can be fitted before dispatch at no extra cost – just let us know when ordering.

Restoration Checklist
