About Matthew Norman

Matthew Norman is one of the most respected names in Swiss desk and carriage clock production — associated with London design and Swiss manufacture, the company became known for combining traditional craftsmanship with the precision of Swiss engineering. Their clocks were purchased as executive desk accessories, presentation pieces and family heirlooms throughout the latter half of the 20th century.

The original guarantee with this clock describes Matthew Norman as "Makers of Fine Clocks" — a reputation built on quality that collectors continue to recognise today.

The Movement

At the heart of the clock is a quality Swiss-made jewelled lever alarm movement — spring-driven, mechanical and designed for years of dependable service. The rear controls allow independent winding and setting of both time and alarm functions, maintaining the traditional charm that only a mechanical clock can provide.

As the movement was already operating correctly, unnecessary dismantling has been avoided to preserve originality. The clock has been inspected, lubricated where required, and both functions tested.

Preparation by Mahn & Co

  • Case cleaned, restored and polished
  • Brass bezel cleaned and polished
  • Movement inspected
  • Movement lubricated where required
  • Timekeeping tested and confirmed
  • Alarm function tested and operational
  • Original box and paperwork retained
  • Running correctly at time of listing

Condition

Presented in good vintage condition for a 1979 example. The case retains an attractive deep gloss mahogany finish, the brass bezel presents well and the Roman numeral dial is clean and legible. The clock displays beautifully and retains the honest character of a genuine late-1970s piece.

Age-related marks, minor veneer losses and finish wear are present in places and clearly shown in the photographs — these have been fully reflected in the asking price. Please study all photographs carefully — they form an important part of the condition description.
