About Matthew Norman
Matthew Norman is a Swiss clockmaker established in the 19th century, with a reputation built specifically around the carriage clock form. Where many carriage clocks on the market today are unsigned or of anonymous manufacture, a piece bearing the Matthew Norman name on both dial and backplate carries a clear maker attribution and a level of movement quality that sets it apart. This example, model 1754A with its eleven-jewel Swiss movement and mechanical alarm function, reflects that heritage well and makes a genuinely collectible addition to any clock collection.
About the Clock
This attractive Matthew Norman model 1754A combines the classic proportions of a traditional carriage clock with the additional practicality of a mechanical alarm function. The clock has been carefully restored, serviced and tested, and is presented in very attractive condition.
The clock is housed within a substantial polished brass case with a folding carrying handle and five bevelled glass panels. The top viewing glass allows the platform escapement to be seen in operation.
The white dial is signed Matthew Norman, London and features black Roman numerals, an outer minute track and traditional hands. Beneath the main dial is a separate subsidiary alarm-setting dial.
The rear plate is signed by Matthew Norman and identifies the movement as Swiss made, model 1754A, the “A” denoting the added alarm function. This attribution is confirmed directly from the case backplate, which is stamped with the maker's name, address and model reference.
Alarm Function
The clock incorporates a mechanical alarm which is set using the subsidiary dial on the front. At the selected time, the alarm train activates and strikes the bell mounted beneath the base of the clock.
Restoration & Servicing
The movement has been removed from the case, dismantled as required, cleaned, inspected, reassembled and correctly lubricated, with Novostar oil applied to the mainspring and synthetic clock oil applied to the pivots. The wheelwork, alarm mechanism and platform escapement have been checked during the restoration process.
The brass case has been carefully cleaned and polished, while retaining the character appropriate to a vintage mechanical clock. The dial, hands and bevelled glass panels have also been carefully cleaned.
Following reassembly, both the timekeeping and alarm functions have been tested prior to sale.

Condition
The clock presents extremely well following restoration, with a bright brass case, clean dial and an exceptionally attractive visible movement.
There are three small edge chips to the bevelled glass panels, positioned close to the brass framework, with no associated cracks. These do not affect the security, appearance or operation of the clock. As with all our listings, please refer closely to the accompanying photographs, which show these areas clearly and form an important part of the description.
Running & Timekeeping
The clock has been bench tested following servicing and is running correctly at the time of listing. The alarm function has also been tested and operates as intended.
As with all vintage mechanical clocks, a small amount of time variation is normal and the clock may require minor regulation after transport and once settled in its new location.
Winding & Setting
The clock is wound and adjusted from the rear. The timekeeping movement and alarm train are wound separately. The alarm time is selected using the subsidiary dial positioned beneath the main time dial.
A suitable winding key will be supplied. Full winding and setup guidance can be provided after purchase if required.
Secure Packing & Delivery
The clock will be carefully prepared for transit and securely packed using generous protective materials. Particular care will be taken to protect the brass case, glass panels and platform escapement during delivery.
It will be sent using a tracked delivery service and dispatched promptly following final pre-delivery checks.
