Vera
A 1930s Perivale Art Deco Oak Gong-Striking Mantel Clock
Fully Serviced 30-Day Returns Restored in Norwich

Vera is a beautifully proportioned British Art Deco mantel clock made by Perivale Clock Manufacturing Company Ltd during the 1930s.

Her compact arched oak case is particularly attractive, with richly figured timber and carved architectural side uprights giving the design considerably more character than many plainer mantel clocks of the period.

At the centre sits an original silvered dial with elegant black Arabic numerals, surrounded by a bright metal bezel and opening glass door.

Traditional British Mechanical Movement

Vera is powered by a traditional two-train Perivale pendulum movement. The clock strikes the number of hours on a resonant coiled gong using a rack-and-snail striking system.

Mahn & Co Restoration

This clock has undergone careful mechanical and cosmetic restoration while deliberately preserving the character expected of an original 1930s clock.

  • Movement dismantled, cleaned and inspected
  • Pivots, wheelwork and bearings checked
  • Mainsprings inspected, cleaned and lubricated with Novostar oil
  • Pivots lubricated with synthetic clock oil
  • Movement reassembled and tested
  • Rack-and-snail strike mechanism adjusted and tested
  • Pendulum adjusted and clock regulated
  • Silvered dial carefully cleaned while preserving its original finish
  • Oak case sympathetically restored and finished
  • Clock run-tested following restoration

The intention has not been to make Vera appear new, but to preserve an attractive original clock while returning her to reliable mechanical operation.

Original Details

Particularly pleasing is the survival of the original "Guaranteed Perivale Clock" five-year guarantee and instruction label inside the rear door.

Vera is also supplied with a period PERIVALE-marked winding key, a lovely accompanying detail which helps complete the clock.

Dimensions

Approximately 21 cm (8.3") high × 22 cm (8.7") wide × 12 cm (4.7") deep.

Her relatively compact proportions make Vera particularly suitable for a mantel, sideboard, bookshelf or smaller period interior.

Condition

Vera is an original vintage mechanical clock approaching a century in age and therefore retains minor marks and patination consistent with her history. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

Operation

The left-hand winding point powers the striking train and the right-hand winding point powers the timekeeping train. The clock should be wound regularly using the supplied key.

As with any traditional mechanical pendulum clock, minor regulation may occasionally be required after transportation and once the clock has settled into its new home.
