Contemporary records identify Gray by the formal initials \u003cstrong\u003eJ.H.G. Gray\u003c\/strong\u003e, while a published memoir describes \"Pat\" Gray as having held the substantive rank of captain in the South African military. He was born in South Africa on 1 August 1909, served in the artillery and fought during the North African Desert campaign.\n    \u003c\/p\u003e\n    \u003cp\u003e\n      According to surviving biographical accounts, most of Gray's unit was captured during the fighting in North Africa, while he escaped capture and subsequently volunteered for service with the Arab Legion. He served in Jordan, including with its Third Regiment, during the period associated with the celebrated British commander Glubb Pasha.\n    \u003c\/p\u003e\n    \u003cp\u003e\n      Following the removal of British officers from the Arab Legion, Pat and his wife Edith returned briefly to England. His later career took them to Muscat and then to the Aden Protectorate, where he became Commanding Officer of the approximately 1,400-strong \u003cstrong\u003eHadhrami Bedouin Legion\u003c\/strong\u003e. There he was known as Qaid, or Commandant, Gray.\n    \u003c\/p\u003e\n    \u003cp\u003e\n      Their story ended tragically in July 1966. Pat and Edith were shot near their home while returning from a film at the Legion lines. Although mortally wounded, Gray managed to turn their car around and drive Edith approximately two miles to hospital. However, no marriage certificate or continuous family ownership record currently accompanies the clock. Its silvered chapter ring carries black Roman numerals, delicate star-shaped minute markers and the Enfield name beneath twelve o'clock. The openwork steel hands sit against a richly figured wooden dial centre.\n    \u003c\/p\u003e\n    \u003cp\u003e\n      The hinged chromed bezel opens from the front for winding and adjustment. Three winding points power the timekeeping, Westminster chime and hour-strike trains, while the original-style selector allows the chime to be silenced when required.\n    \u003c\/p\u003e\n    \u003cp\u003e\n      The movement is marked \u003cstrong\u003e\"Made in England – Patent No. 421434.\"\u003c\/strong\u003e This British patent was issued in 1934 and is associated with Enfield's Westminster-chime mechanism. Components were individually inspected before careful reassembly, with Novostar oil applied to the mainsprings and synthetic clock oil to the pivots.
